On July 31, 1976, the Big Thompson River experienced a 10,000-year flood event--the deadliest in Colorado history. Overnight, the flood claimed 316 homes, 45 mobile homes, 52 businesses, 438 automobiles, and 143 lives in the narrow canyons east of Estes Park.
