Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K. 546 originated as a fugue for two pianos (K. 426), composed in 1783 during his deep study of Bach’s counterpoint. Five years later, in 1788—the same summer he completed his final trilogy of symphonies—Mozart revisited the piece, transcribing it for strings and adding a dramatic Adagio introduction.
