A bull moose that fell through lake ice in the Adirondack Mountains was saved by New York conservation officials in a laborious cold-water rescue. The moose fell through the ice around 11 a.m. Thursday,

People are warned of the dangers of falling through ice on a frozen lake, but did you know animals can fall victim to falling through ice too? Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECO) and DEC civilian staff from Indian Lake rescued a moose from Lake Abanakee on Thursday,

DEC forest rangers and environmental conservation officers had a dilemma Thursday. A moose fell through the ice of an Adirondack lake, 200 feet from shore.

Police called in the help of trained DEC staff to get the moose out of the water. DEC Rangers Evan Nahor and Matt Savarie used jet sleds to keep themselves from falling through the ice as they cut a passage through the ice from where the moose fell into the water to the shore.

"There’s no training manual on how to get a moose out of the ice," said one of the DEC officers involved in the rescue.

State Department of Environmental Conservation officials rescued a moose that had broken through the ice on Lake Abanakee in Hamilton County. Dressed in cold-water rescue gear, the officers ventured out onto the ice.
