Flu and COVID shots can protect you during the worst winter months. Here's experts' advice on whether to get them together.

Vaccinations have become a traditional part of flu season with the influenza vaccine revised most years to protect from new strains of the illness.

Reformulated flu and COVID-19 shots are available to Oregonians starting this month. And an RSV vaccine — developed only last year — could have an unprecedented impact keeping infants out of the hospital this fall and winter.

Generally, experts recommend COVID-19 and flu vaccines for most people and RSV vaccines for some. The vaccines are all safe to get together at the same time. As the weather cools down and seasonal illnesses start circulating,

Extremely rare side effects – like allergic reaction – can happen, but the risk is still lower than with many other common medications. You can get a flu shot even if you are allergic to eggs. Serious reactions to the small amount of egg protein in flu vaccines are unlikely.

Wash your hands, learn to cough and sneeze into your elbow, stay home when ill, get a vaccination for flu, COVID and RSV as soon as they become available (expected in October), and wear a mask in indoor public settings, especially if you are at high risk for infection or recovering from a recent illness.
